Journaling: Your Sanity Saver
Maybe you think “diary of my teens” when you see the word “journaling.”
You COULD do it that way, but I’m here to tell you that journaling has a quiet power to help you through the tough times in life.
Writing down your life may seem simple - and the act of writing is simple - but journaling with intention, focus, and a mindset of self-care can be quietly transformational. I always advocate for writing by hand as it taps into your brain and your emotions differently than by typing or using an app - but all journaling is helpful. The many benefits of journaling are even backed by research!
Ready to feel better? I can help you with that!
Benefits of Journaling
Gain clarity and perspective on what matters most - you know, the deeper stuff.
Research on expressive writing suggests that putting thoughts into words can help people organize stressful experiences and think more clearly.
Reduce stress and emotional overload. Seriously - I’ve had it with emotional overload, haven’t you?
A 2022 meta-analysis found journaling was linked to a small but significant reduction in depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms overall.
Process difficult feelings in a healthy way. Listen, hard feelings happen, so let’s get healthier about it. Might be easier than, say, eating more broccoli.
Writing about emotions can help people work through pain, worry, and pressure instead of carrying it all silently.
Support healing during hard seasons. One glance at the rest of my website, and you’ll see I talk about the hard seasons known as Perimenopause and Menopause. But it helps with allllll the stressful times.
The strongest benefits in the research often show up for anxiety and PTSD symptoms, making journaling a useful support tool during stressful periods.
Strengthen focus and mental capacity. That’s right, kick rumination to the curb and improve memory!
Studies have found expressive writing can reduce intrusive thoughts and improve working memory over time.
Turn reflection into real progress. A daily practice WILL show this! I’ve seen it with my workshop participants, and with myself.
Research suggests the benefits of journaling may build over time, which makes it a practical habit for long-term emotional resilience.
Melody Jones on the High Desert Voices Podcast
I got to talk all things journaling on the High Desert Voice podcast! I sound a little quiet on here, which is not my real life - ha! Click below to listen.
But wait, there’s more! Journaling improves physical health.
Science shows that journaling and expressive writing can meaningfully improve and support your physical well‑being.
Research points to fewer doctor visits, fewer sick days, and small but measurable improvements in markers like immune function and blood pressure.
In short, putting your inner world on paper isn’t just “feel‑good” - it’s a simple, research‑backed way to handle life’s pressures with more clarity, calm, and resilience!
Who doesn’t want more calm and clarity?? Bring it on, I say.
I get it!
LIFE! And navigating its many challenges. Journaling is a simple yet powerful life navigation tool. I’ve seen it transform quality of life for people in different roles and stages of life, including caregivers for loved ones, early-onset dementia folks, grief groups, addiction recovery groups, and women navigating perimenopause and menopause (check out my Hot, Bothered, and Unfiltered services - where we get SPICY while we journal!).
